How Long Does It Take to Make an Injection Mold? Lead Times Explained
Typical lead times
After design approval, a custom production mold normally takes 25–35 days to complete. Rapid prototype tools can ship in 10–15 days, and first molded parts usually follow within days of the trial.
What happens during those weeks
- Days 1–5: DFM and design. Mold-flow simulation validates filling, warpage, weld lines and cooling before steel is cut.
- Days 5–20: machining. CNC milling, EDM and grinding shape cores, cavities and sliders to ±0.01mm.
- Days 20–30: assembly and trial. The mold is assembled, fitted and trial-run on a press; samples are measured against your drawing.
- Days 30–35: adjustments and shipping. Final corrections, texture and documentation, then shipment.
How to move faster
Approve the DFM quickly — most delays come from waiting on design feedback. Freeze changes after T1 samples unless they are functional. If your schedule is tight, ask for a two-cavity mold instead of four, or run a bridge tool while the production tool is machined. Automated shops running 24/7 robotic cells compress the calendar without cutting corners.
